ENHANCED SAFETY AT ATHENS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

New SCANTER Radar from Terma ensures enhanced safety at Athens International Airport

Athens Int. Airport

Aarhus, Denmark, 11 November 2020– Terma was contracted by Norwegian Indra Navia technology provider to deliver and install an advanced SCANTER 5502 Surface Movement Radar (SMR) for Athens International Airport in Greece.

The SMR will work as the Primary Sensor in Indra Navia’s new InNova Ground Advanced Surface Movement Guidance & Control System (A-SMGCS) delivered to Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA).

“It is very positive to see that HCAA as a visionary aviation authority despite the Covid-19 crisis demonstrates the will to invest in new equipment and thereby stand stronger when traffic hopefully returns soon” says Jesper Fammé, Security Sales Manager, Terma.

The purpose of the SMR is to maximize safety in airports by allowing Air Traffic Controllers to monitor, advice, and instruct aircraft, vehicles, personnel etc. moving on the ground in an airport. A radar is very suitable for this purpose as it covers a large area and operates independently of light conditions (day/night), visibility conditions e.g. fog, and possible precipitation e.g. rain and snow.

The new SCANTER in Athens will be the second SCANTER SMR radar in Greece provided by the Denmark based Terma Group. A similar radar was delivered to Thessaloniki International Airport and integrated into Indra’s ASMGCS as in Athens.

Today a total of plus 140 international airports around the globe operate Terma SMR radars.
