Terma and MyDefence expand cooperation with initial focus on counter-drone technologies

Terma and MyDefence have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore closer cooperation across defence technologies. The first step will combine the companies’ complementary counter-drone capabilities, with further areas of cooperation to be explored over time.

The Danish defence industry needs to work more closely together if Denmark and Europe are to strengthen their position in the face of a rapidly evolving threat landscape and field new technology more quickly. This is the premise behind the cooperation between Terma and MyDefence, which have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the development, integration, and joint marketing of solutions to counter hostile and unwanted drones.

At the same time, the cooperation reflects a broader European challenge. New threats are evolving rapidly, while operational requirements increasingly demand that technologies function as one integrated system. The MoU is therefore also intended to demonstrate how Danish companies can combine their respective strengths and bring complete solutions into operational use more quickly.

Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Terma, says: “Denmark has strong defence technology companies with capabilities that are individually competitive on the international stage. But Europe’s security needs increasingly cut across technologies. We therefore need to become better at combining our strengths and building integrated solutions together. Our cooperation with MyDefence is a concrete example of how Danish industry can contribute more cohesive capabilities while strengthening Europe’s ability to develop and deploy critical defence technology independently.”

Dan Hermansen, CEO of MyDefence, says: “The modern drone threat cannot be addressed with a single sensor or a single technology. The real value emerges when RF, radar and other sensors work together and provide the operator with one common operational picture. Denmark and Europe already have many of the technologies and capabilities we need. The task is to make them work better together and bring them into operational use more quickly. That is exactly the ambition behind our cooperation with Terma.”

The first concrete step will be taken in 2026 with the integration of Terma’s SCANTER Sphera radar technology with MyDefence’s RF-based sensors, jammers and IRIS C2 system. This will bring multiple sensor technologies together in a single integrated counter-UAS solution, providing one common operational picture.

MyDefence’s RF sensors can detect and identify radio signals from drones and their operators, while radar adds an additional layer of detection of the drones in flight and can, among other things, help detect autonomous drones or drones operating without a conventional radio link. The data is brought together in MyDefence’s C2 system, enabling operators to assess threats across multiple sensors. The combination is intended to provide more robust protection against different types of drones and different modes of operation.

First step in a broader cooperation

The MoU serves as a roadmap for broader technical and industrial cooperation. In addition to the integration of SCANTER Sphera, RF sensors and C2, the companies will explore further joint solutions, including within maritime platforms and, in the longer term, potential areas of cooperation in space and satellite technology. The ambition is for the cooperation to evolve over time from the initial integration into a broader strategic partnership in which the companies can jointly contribute to Danish, European and international defence and security programmes.
